Giannina Gutierrez is a mixed media, fine artist based in East Harlem, NYC and a resident artist at El Barrio’s Artspace PS109. Born in Barranquilla, Colombia and growing up in Jamaica, Queens, NY, Giannina grew up as a first generation immigrant, tied to very strong cultural ways while also immersed in New York City lifestyles. Passionate for Art since childhood, Giannina began her arts education at the Cooper Union Saturday Program, studied life drawing for several years at The Art Student League of New York & majored in Fine Arts at the Pratt Institute.

She is a painter and a sculptor and works with a variety of materials including found objects. Through her work, she explores the dynamics of objects and textures, focusing on processes and the potential of the materials in use. Through mixed media and repurposed materials, textures are celebrated and explored. She believes strongly in manipulating materials in an attempt to explore possibilities and express her curiosity in her surroundings. Giannina looks to create work that expands past an aesthetic, generating an experience. Currently she is working on a series of sculptures designed for indoor and outdoor installation.

A true mixed media artist, Giannina currently works as a fine artist, makeup artist, teaching artist, and muralist, on occasion independently curating exhibitions while developing new bodies of work exploring new methods and disciplines. Giannina’s work looks to engage its viewer, provoking reflection and embracing the power of art to transform, on many levels.

Her work has been featured in several galleries, public art projects, publications throughout NYC, Miami, Chicago, & Puerto Rico.
